Kuroko no Basket

Lately, I've been addicted to this manga and its anime. It began when I accidentally encounter Kuroko no Basket manga - or like the translation in my country, Kuroko's Basketball- in Gramedia book store. I enjoy playing basketball and was a part of basketball club in my college. Well, even though I'm hardly a good player since I only began to play basket in university. Ho ho ho. My dribble, pass and drive is bad but my shooting ability is terrible. My eyesight is awful and because I don't like to use my glasses when I played  basketball, I end up almost always miss my shoot. By the way, I was feeling nostalgic when I saw this manga in book store. So nostalgic that I end up bought it. Moreover, I like Shonen Jump - I love lots of manga from there (One Piece, Bleach, D.Gray-Man, Naruto, Gintama, Hunter x Hunter, etc) - and I know that Kuroko no Basket is one of the series from Jump. I immediately falling in love with its protagonist, quickly watch its anime and love it to the point that it's almost obsessive. He he he.

Seirin High School Basketball Club
Kuroko no Basket is a shonen manga that follow the story of Kuroko Tetsuya, a basketball player who excels at passing and Kagami Taiga, a basketball player with enormous spirit and talent, on their journey to beat "Generation of Miracles" and become no 1 in Japan with their team, Seirin High School basketball club. The reception for the manga is generally well. In 2013, it became the 3rd best selling manga in Japan behind One Piece and Shingeki no Kyojin, sold more than 8 million copies.

One of Kuroko no Basket's main strength is its interesting characters and interaction between them. I thought this manga is popular with yaoi fans even though it's not a yaoi manga. Having read the manga, I realized that the friendship between its characters is touching and well-written (Really, boy's friendship is something that girls adore. Even I kind of jealous sometimes with how boys treat their boy friends. It looks so fun), and so I kind of understand why some people wish they're more than just friend (laugh). Okay! I'll tell you my favorite characters from it!

Kuroko Tetsuya
Kuroko is the main protagonist of this manga and I really like him! Maybe it has something to do with the fact that my most favorite thing from basketball game is passing. Rather than the sight of the ball going through the hoop, my heart race more when I saw players pass ball to each other to made the ball advanced on the court. Then here is Kuroko, a basketball player who excels in passing. I love everything about him, his deadpan, straight forward, hard-working, calm and kind personality. Even his unnoticeable presence and his atrocious bedhead. <3. But he can be so scary too when he's angry.  It's no wonder that he ranked no 1 in all 3 character popularity polls.

Kagami is the deuteragonist of Kuroko no Basket manga. Contrast to Kuroko's deadpan and calm personality, Kagami is hot-blooded and short temper. He has exceptional basketball talent especially his jumping ability. Kuroko said that he's a shadow, while Kagami is a light. The brighter the light, the darker it's shadow and makes the light stand up even more. Maybe it's just me. But Kagami reminds me a little of Renji from Bleach. He he he.
Kuroko and Kagami. Seirin's letal freshman duo
Kuroko and Kagami's cooperation play is the key to most of Seirin's win. I really love their combination play!

Kise Ryouta in serious mode. Kakkoii...
Kise Ryouta is the first "Generation of Miracles" that introduced in the story. He's strong, he's handsome, he's kind, he's cheerful and silly sometimes but he's so cool when he's serious. Can you blame me for really like him? Kise is my 2nd most favorite character from this manga.

Kise Ryouta in Teikou Middle School. Kawaii...
Kise Ryouta in Kaijou High School. He also work as a model
Generation of Miracles (Akashi, Murasakibara, Aomine, Midorima, Kise), Kagami and Kuroko. Kakkoii!!
My third most favorite character is Aomine Daiki. Arrghhh... Honestly there are so many interesting characters in this manga! All of "Generation of Miracles" and Seirin basketball club's member are cool too.

Despite having great characters, good amount of humor and touching friendship, this manga also have setback. Particularly the exaggerated things about basketball plays. Compared to Slam Dunk which is more normal, this manga has more nonsensical moves in it. Mataku... This manga makes dunk looks like a piece of cake. It's not normal to see so many dunks in a game in High School competition (well, at least in my country). Let's hope it's not turn out like Prince of Tennis (which is I like, by the way. But stop read it since it become more unbelievable) or worse, being as ridiculous and over-the-top like Eyeshield 21 (Errrghh, by the way I collected this series *guilty smile*). Fairly speaking, it almost reach the level of absurdity as those two (laugh).

Even though it's ludicrous, I still recommend you to read the manga and watch the anime. I kind of like the anime more than the manga, mainly because it's beautiful music score that really add tension and emotion to the story. So what are you waiting for? Read it. Watch it. Then tell me your impression about Kuroko no Basket below!
